It is the Nepali word for elder brother. On a mountain it is not a courtesy and it is not a job title — it is what you call the man who went up ahead of you, and it is the only word in the industry that assigns responsibility instead of describing a service.
A guide is hired. A dai is answerable. You can fire a guide. The point of a dai is that he is still responsible for you afterwards.
It is also, here, his name. Not a title he awarded himself and not a brand anybody built for him — the word and the man are the same thing on this site. Which is the whole of the offer, said plainly: you are not buying a programme with a good word on the front of it. You are buying the one person that word makes answerable to you.
You get one, and this is him
DaiFounder, social entrepreneur, fourth-generation Idahoan
Eleven countries lived in. Five years in India, two in Nepal. An Oxford MBA, twenty-four years running his own firm advising executive teams, and a childhood spent in the Owyhee country of southwest Idaho, where his family has measured things for four generations.
He is not a mountaineer. That is the most important sentence on this page and it is the one the rest of it is built on.
He has never climbed an eight-thousand-metre peak, and he is not going to. If the man taking your money is also chasing a summit, you have bought a conflict of interest.
What he actually does for a living
Every job he has held for thirty years has been one of two things: establishing what is true, or deciding what to do first when something is going wrong.
Verification.
At sixteen he became the youngest person on record to hold the American Concrete Institute's field testing certification, inspecting concrete on commercial buildings and structural bridges. He went on to run land survey crews and to build the regional GPS base-station network that surveyors across his state positioned against for years. The whole trade is one question: where is this actually, and how far, and how much has it moved since.
Triage.
Two years on the operations floor of a power utility as first response for priority outages across servers, network, storage and applications. The skill that job teaches is not repair. It is deciding, quickly and with incomplete information, what is genuinely failing, what can wait, and when to stop and stabilise instead of pressing on.
Diligence.
Twenty-four years advising executive teams and assessing startup investments — including taking a company through the technical and operational diligence that ended in its acquisition. The professional habit is asking whether a thing actually pencils out, and saying so when it does not.
Distance.
Eleven countries. Five years in India and two in Nepal, which is long enough to stop being a visitor and to know which operators in that industry are worth trusting with a person.
None of that is a mountaineering résumé and it is not offered as one. It is the argument that the man deciding whether you go up today should be someone whose entire working life has been spent establishing what is true and calling it early — and who has nothing on the mountain to win.
What he is not
Not your guide.
Professional mountaineers put you on the rope and take you up. They have summited things he never will. He is not one of them and will not be on your rope. Who they are belongs on /who-takes-you, and that page currently names nobody — it says so itself, and says why.
Not your doctor.
He is Mental Health First Aid certified. That is a real course and a deliberately modest one: it trains you to recognise a crisis, respond to it, and get the person to somebody qualified. It is not clinical training, it is not addiction medicine, and it is not a wilderness medical qualification. What it means in practice is that the person beside you is trained to notice, and trained to know that he is not the treatment.
Not the medical cover.
Who provides clinical and expedition medical care, and what wilderness or high-altitude qualification anybody on this engagement actually holds. This is the largest remaining blank on the site, and Mental Health First Aid does not fill it.
Not your therapist.
Nobody attached to this is qualified to counsel you, the mountain least of all. If what you need is treatment, this is the wrong product and he will tell you so before you pay rather than after.
Not staff.
This is the one that matters. Everybody else in your life is on a payroll, and a payroll has a second name on it by Thursday. He takes one client at a time, which is the only arrangement under which the answer to “who else does he work for” is nobody.
What he is accountable for
Not the summit. The return.
The craft of the trade is subtraction: turnaround times, weather windows nobody pushes, and the client you tell no. It takes fifteen years to learn, it is invisible when it works, and it is rewarded by no incentive anywhere in the industry. Clients pay for summits. Sponsors pay for records. Nobody has ever paid a man for the day he turned everyone around at eleven in the morning and walked them down and nothing happened.
That day is what the money is for. It is the only thing on the invoice you cannot get anywhere else, because everyone else you could hire is paid, one way or another, to get you higher.
To be suppliedWhether turnaround authority is contractually his, at which steps, what triggers it, and what happens to the money when it is used. Drafted by the operator and read by a lawyer before this page states it as a term.
And what he is doing in Nepal
2017 – 2022Five years in India, then out of it on foot across the border. Eleven countries lived in by this point, which is the difference between knowing a place and having been there.
May 2022Walked into Nepal from India with thirty dollars, two years after the country's tourism economy had gone to zero. In a room in Lumbini he promised a group of officials, press and ordinary people that he would help put a floor back under the industry. He has spent four years on it. He does not describe it as finished.
Spring 2022Spent a season in Kathmandu asking operators, insurers and agencies the unglamorous question — not what the death zone is like, but why the money moves the way it moves, and which links in the chain were one season from ruin.
Summer 2023Walked the original approach to Everest Base Camp from Jiri — eighteen days on foot over the ridges that the forty-minute flight skips, in monsoon, because Lukla was closed. Carried a full expedition medical kit the whole way and treated trekkers with it, and one guide, who was carrying an injury quietly because that is what guides do.
Eighteen days of walking at the speed a body actually acclimatises, four years inside the economics of the industry that will take you up, and a working knowledge of who in it is worth trusting with a person. He is a social entrepreneur before he is anything else on this page, and the promise in Lumbini is the reason any of the rest of it exists.
What is not settled yet
This page is new and the engagement it describes is not fully drafted. What follows is unanswered at the time of writing, and none of it is being guessed at in the meantime:
Who provides medical cover, and what he is and is not certified to do himself.
Whether turnaround authority is formally his, and what it costs when it is used.
What a month actually looks like — days in person, whose city, what happens at four in the morning.
How the engagement ends, and what happens to the seat if you leave in month three.
The terms, the figure and the way in are on one page.
